Snow Days in the Long Hot Summer of 2012

July was hot so I grabbed a couple of books off the shelf to read in the cool comfort of the air conditioning. Turns out they were both snow stories.

Trapped  by Michael Northrop

Seven kids waiting for rides home get stuck at school after early dismissal due to the snow storm. The snow comes down faster and heavier and no one arrives to pick them up. One night in school seems like an adventure, but one night turns into two, then three, leaving them wonder how they will survive.

The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

Mabel and Jack left the Allegheny River valley and family behind to start fresh in Alaska where they work hard to make a go as homesteaders. Childless, they both still long for the child that it is too late in life for them to have. One night during the first snow fall of the year, they run out into the snow and make a snowman, deciding to turn it into a girl. The next day the snow girl has melted, but footsteps lead away into the woods.  Both Jack and Mable begin to see a little girl darting about in the woods. Their longing is so intense that they may have imagined her into existence. Is she real or a trick of the imagination?
